My brother worked for Maxwell Coffee for 30 years. They'd bring the beans in in big bags and roast them in giant roasters before grinding them. They had tasters to make sure the coffee when brewed was just right.

My grandma made her own sauerkraut in Missouri. Dad always said the store kind wasn't anything compared to Grandma's. She cooked it with pork ribs.

My Mom's family is from coastal Georgia and rice is a staple at every meal. In the Great Depression people lived on government " commodities" that were mostly peas and rice. My Dad who was from the midwest ate hominy and pinto beans a lot. Then they fought in WW2 and built a great economy for future generations that we today can continue or destroy. Our choice.

My father's parents were farmers and raised all their food but coffee and sugar. Grain like wheat and corn was taken to the mill and ground and the miller kept part as payment for the grinding. My Dad was in high school before they got a car. They did better than city folks in the Great Depression as farmers. It was very hard work. They ploughed with mules, cooked on a wood stove and the bathroom was an outhouse. Grandma washed clothes in a huge black kettle in the backyard by boiling the clothes then rinsing them no matter the weather. They made their own butter and cured meats. And she had a kitchen garden which she canned. And made their clothes herself. She also worked with the local doctor to deliver babies. We are sooo soft compared to just a generation or two ago.

My great grandma was the youngest of 13 and married at fourteen and had 7 herself. She was born in 1892 and lived to 90.I think that's why they were so religious because death was a constant thing they dealt with.
