  4. I took German in college because my roommate was fluent in it and we were required to learn one language and my roommate's Mom was from Vienna. She'd send us wonderful goodies. Poppy seed cake,Swiss Choclates,etc. Happily I can still read German although my speech isn't as proficient. This recipe sounds tastey.

  5. My cat still hunts mice and garden snakes though he is fed cat food daily and meat scraps. Unfortunately he leaves these little "gifts" on my next door neighbor's front walk. Lol! I told he likes you. Somehow it wasn't appreciated. Luckily she's a friend.

  6. My ancestors were on both sides of the Civil War. It's quite possible troops containing my Dad's cousins from Illinois may have fought and burned down a cousin's barn of my Mom's enroute to Savannah,Ga.where in 1944 my parents met at an ice cream shoppe and later married after WW2. Lol!

  7. Go to Savannah,Ga.for a great St.Pat's Day parade and lots of great food from green beers,to corned beef,and sea food. We have lots of Irish roots in Savannah as well as the third oldest Jewish synagogue in the US. And everyones Irish one day of the year. My Georgia family like most port cities's families looks both southern and like the UN. Great Chinese food too.

  8. During WW2 my Dad was a B24 pilot who dropped money,personnel, and supplies to the resistance in single mission forays. Often at night with only latterns to guide the drop zone. He and the boys,and they were all so young,were sad to see civilians in the countries he flew into eating out of the trash cans outside of the soldiers's mess hall. The boys started leaving food on their trays not throwing it out.The Quartermasters too snuck food out too. Mom said we had rationing books in the USA but nothing like Europe went through.

  12. Dates and pistachios are traditional sweets given at the end of Ramadan for Eid too. My roommie in college was from Iran and her Mom sent a big box of dried dates,apricots, and pistachios to share for El Eid.

  16. One of my patients was a little old lady that was the retired head lunch room lady for the next county over. I got the best biscuit recipe from her. Her hint was to dip the biscuits in butter before popping them in the oven. Yum!

  22. My mother swore her high school served horsemeat " beef stew" in her school cafeteria in WW2. Lol! When she married Dad in WW2 right after the Japanese surrender her mother had to run around to borrow sugar rations for her wedding cake. And their was no silk or satin for wedding dresses.

  23. Me too. One of my best friends was Jewish. And so was my 6th grade teacher and my cousins. So I learned both religions's songs. Then in college I worked in a Jewish old folks home and attended services with patients which gave me a better insight into my own Christian faith.

  27. I watched this segment. Love the channel. History is more than memorizing dates and events. It entails deep dives into the culture of the people. Food,trade,clothing,music,customs, religion,laws,and relationships. People who who disliked history in school were sadly taught by boring teachers. We'd have more understanding in the world today if history was taught by real historians not propagandists.

  29. Fasinating comments from Thai people who are familiar with how the curry is made. TY. As someone born in Savannah,Ga eating rice often was part of my family's routine like in parts of Asia we eat rice more than potatoes and we love curry. This sounds like a new dish to try.

  43. Victorian times were fraught with untimely deaths. Anyone researching your family tree soon learns the death rate especially for children was awful. No wonder they ate cakes and sweets to ease their communal pain.

  44. Dad called it sh*t on a shingle in WW2. One time some of his friends, not him, snuck into the mess hall and stole eggs for a feast. They were real eggs. Unfortunately they were drunk and fell out the mess hall window. Dozens of eggs were smashed in their trench coat pockets. They spent the rest of the night trying to clean up the evidence of the theft. My great uncle was a Sargeant in charge of food supplies and did a booming business on the side selling sugar and eggs to the Brits who were under serious rationing. One was an actual " Lady". That's how he started his antique china collection.

  45. Traditional southern USA Christmas had fruit cakes as desert. Either dark or light. I have my grandmother's recipes. These were baked not boiled but probably had the same roots.They were huge cakes baked slowly.

  47. My neighbor has several pets RIP in her backyard. She has little tombstone shrines. Her other neighbor who hails from a foreign country thought she was praying at a religious shrine when she was tiding it. He apologized for interrupting her prayers.Lol!

  51. My grandparents were farmers. Often hobos would stop and beg food from my grandmother. She never turned anyone away. She'd feed them and give them a package of food to go. Once my grandfather caught a man stealing a milk cow. The man cried. He was a,sharecropper with a wife and five kids and no food and had just hit town. My grandfather who was also a Deputy Sheriff gave him $40,00 out of his own pocket and told him to buy a milk cow and even showed him the market where he could by one. That was a lot of money back then but he'd just sold a load of melons.

  52. My grandfather and his buddy used to go to Savannah,Ga and bring back smuggled liquor from Bermuda and the Bahamas. They'd sell it to private clubs and roadhouses. They got caught but it was " okay" they got off with a warning because grandpa's partner was the Sheriff's son and grandpa's grandpa was the judge. Lol!

  53. My grandmother went to Turkey on holiday and was surprised at the coffee as to how rich and strong it was but she loved coffee and liked the food. Grandma was an adventurous old lady. Lol! A long way from a Missouri farm wife to a world traveler. Grandma was something.

  59. Oh,Yes that's very true. Neighbors you barely know will come with food and condolences. It's a nice custom. And does relieve the bereaved from feeling they must entertain or cook if out of town family comes. They can feed them w/o effort.

  62. The south didn't have enough to feed themselves with all the male population off to war,and the requisitions of food stuffs by the Confederate military and Yankee naval blockade. Rice was the main food crop in east Georgia and Mississippi as well as cotton and it wouldn't have been that available or nutritious due to the collapse of the economy in war time. Whole counties's worth of young men and even old marched off to war and many never came back and after Sherman came through targetting the wealthy plantations there wsn't much left to rebuild with then there was the bank crash of 1893 and the bole weevils in the early 20th century. The south only recovered it's economy in the late 20's then that was struck by the Great Depression. Mississippi can be said to have never recovered even in modern times. My Aunt and Uncle were Baptist missionaries there in 1960s and the poverty stunned them. They became involved in civil rights because of the poverty and almost were lynched by the Klan. Democrats frowned on Yankees registering Black voters. Luckily the FBI had an informant in the local Klan. Everybody was either KKK or White Businessmen's Council members back then. The question is who paid for the " hits" on SJWs like Dr.King and my Uncle? Lol! For sure Ray wasn't a lone killer. No one believes that BS.

  67. I was in school. It was right after the Cuban missile crisis. We wore dog tags to school like the military. The roads were full of tanks headed south. Many of Dad's co-workers sent their wives and kids up north. Kennedy made the Russians blink. He also was pushing the Civil Right Bill.Many wondered who actually killed him?

  68. I actually love mincemeat pies although it wasn't a traditional dish here in the part of the States where I grew up. MY southern grandma made pecan and banana cream pies.My grandmother though from the midwest made fruit pies and even mincemeat cookies.
