  1. What we need is permaculture. Monoculture requires the overconsumption of water and the destruction of the ecosystem. Argroforestry is how the Native Americans grew crops for centuries before we arrived.

  2.  @amk4956  Agroforestry actually requires less labor because it grows a diversity of crops on smaller plots of land instead of giant fields of just one crop. This restores biodiversity, saves freshwater, and creates a much more sustainable agricultural system. Monoculture requires pesticides that are killing the very insects out ecosystem relies on in order to get rid of all the pests that monoculture attracts. This irony leads to agroforestry producing higher yields because every plant complements each other, natural pollinators help support them, and agroforestry is less vulnerable to weather patterns and ecological disasters. Basically, a more sustainable ecosystem can sustain higher yields more consistently than the monoculture farms that are now losing hundreds of acres of land to drought every year. Andrew Millison is a great YouTube whose channel is dedicated this if you're not familiar with him. He's a certified permaculture designer who teaches at Oregon State University.
