"We ignored it because the economy was doing really, really well." This is the depressing realization the MAGA movement has revealed to me. Humans will support literally anything if their pockets are full and they benefit from it. Just like when Hitler rose to power, it wasn't Nazism that made the people fall in love with him. It was him fulfilling his promise to fix the German economy mixed with his aggressive nationalism that galvinized the German public's support for the Holocaust. If the strongman saves the economy, then surely he must be right about the "enemy within," right? Never tell yourself, "I'd never do something like that." Everyone tells themselves that. Even the German public in the early 30s must've said the same thing to themselves before they started volunteering to help the Nazis. Underestimating what you're capable of, thinking you're naturally good is the most dangerous game of playing with fire there is. We must keep speaking and resisting before the radical minority becomes the majority. By then, it'll be too late to stop it.
