  1. The impact of suburbanization on young people has never been more apparent, yet it's easily the most overlooked. The lack of third places that walkable communities provide is what allows people to socialize. Car centric suburbia locks you under house arrest until you're old enough to own a car and the third places are so far away, that nobody meets anyone spontaneously anymore. Why drive 30 minutes to the nearest shopping center or restaurant when you can just order everything from Amazon Prime and DoorDash everyday? Our infrastructure is literally built to encourage mass isolation. I cringe so hard every time I hear someone say, "good fences make good neighbors," because that's just the nice guy's way of saying, "stay away from me and never talk to me and maybe I will tolerate your existence." And yet, people love to complain about how kids never go outside anymore because they're glued to their devices, even though we are actively encouraging them to keep doing exactly that.
