  1. Joe, one cannot worship God and Mammon. It's not as complicated as you're making it. Celebrity culture worship, pop culture worship is the worship of Mammon. The word translated as "mammon" or often money means, "the treasure that a person trusts in". i.e. what we want/value. Mammon could also be thought of as currency. So do you trust in an ineffable communion or a transaction (consumerism)? That's almost a simpler way to say what that verse is getting at, at least for the modern consciousness. By the way, historic explicit religious, institutional practice has been plagued with Mammon and consumerism and manipulation of authority...which is why Jesus taught against it.
