  1. Nato was formed in 1949 by the US and 11 other Western countries to counter any communist expansion. This in turn forced the Soviet Union and its allies to form the Warsaw Pact Alliance in 1955. Since then former countries under the influence of Russia have joined NATO which in effect virtually surrounds Russia's borders. Ukraine is on Russia's doorstep and is seeking Nato membership. This is unacceptable to Mr Putin as the US tends to place military hardware (including missiles) and troops on the ground in these Nato countries. With anti-Russian and anti-communist sentiment prevalent in the West and Nato having now expanded to 30 countries forces Russia to now draw a red line in the sand. That red line is Ukraine.
