  3. The traditional leaders of Europe — i.e., the United Kingdom, France and Germany — are reeling in the wake of Pete Hegseth’s speech to the NATO defense ministers and JD Vance’s address to the Munich Security Conference. They are reacting like a jilted spouse who was just informed by their significant other that the marriage is kaput… crying and gnashing of teeth is widespread. In a desperate bid to recover from Vance’s verbal beating of the European authoritarians, French President Emmanuel Macron hastily convened a summit in Paris with a select group of European leaders in order to craft a coordinated plan to continue the war in Ukraine without the United States: The meeting was a fiasco. Despite trying to stack the conference with members ostensibly inclined to keep the lights on in Kiev, they failed to reach a consensus and emerged from the session taking verbal shots at one another: We are witnessing history. The post-World War II order with the US ruling the roost is coming unglued. I think this is the beginning of the end for NATO and for the European Union. But the collapse is not imminent. Political and economic chaos are likely to shake the major European countries and create internal pressures in the next two years that will lead the various nations to seek their own path for security outside the confines of NATO or the EU. Already we are hearing that some states are keen on reviving economic relations with Russia, with an eye on getting access to cheap oil and gas. - sonar21
