The fact that only Moscow cared about the fate of US blogger Gonzalo Lira, who died in a Ukrainian prison last year, is a sign of the “deepest crisis” affecting the international bodies that are supposed to protect journalists, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.
Lira, a Chilean-American citizen, passed away behind bars in Ukraine in January 2024, while awaiting trial for “systematically justifying the Russian aggression.”
Zakharova recalled the ordeal of the US journalist during a conference on the development of modern media at the Moscow School of Economics (MSE) on Tuesday.
“Has anyone else talked about Gonzalo Lira? An American journalist, He had a US passport. Has anyone talked about him besides Russia? Try to remember. Nobody did,” she insisted.
When asked about Lira’s incarceration, the White House and the US State Department replied with “strategic silence, generously paid for by USAID, an American agency that supposedly promotes international development. It is ridiculous,” the spokeswoman stressed. - RT

Interestingly, during the three-week operation by 800 soldiers, the Russian troops wore colored armbands to make it difficult for Ukrainian troops to identify them, with the first 400 wearing blue armbands, the color commonly associated with the Ukrainian army, while the next 400 wearing red armbands. Additional details of the operation include the need for special protective equipment to avoid poisoning. Trolleys were used to carry water and everything else inside the pipe. Upon receiving the signal, the troops immediately appeared, catching the Ukrainian rear by surprise, causing confusion and a reorganization of the defense lines, which forced the Ukrainian defenders to hastily withdraw from the sector.
The Russian Defense Ministry shared a video on March 11, showing a group of Ukrainian defenders who refused to surrender to the Russian Armed Forces, trying hard to escape en masse even on foot from Sudzha. While fleeing, the group, consisting of about 30 enemy soldiers, tried to hide inside a building, but the reconnaissance unit of the Sever Group of Force was watching them. The drone pilot waited for the right moment, and the attack drone launched an attack, then the building exploded with a huge explosion along with the invading troops. Moscow faced its largest-ever wave of Ukrainian kamikaze drones on Tuesday night, with Russian air defenses successfully intercepting hundreds of the incoming UAVs, according to officials.
Later in the day, senior Ukrainian and US officials are set to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss potential peace negotiations – a process President Donald Trump is pushing both Kiev and Moscow to embrace.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a total of 337 Ukrainian drones were neutralized overnight.
The ministry’s statement detailed that 126 of these were intercepted over Kursk Region, which is adjacent to the Ukrainian border and well-covered by Russian air defenses; 91 were brought down over Moscow Region, which surrounds the capital.
Largest raid of its kind
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin described the Ukrainian attack as the most extensive to have targeted the city, with at least 74 drones aimed directly at the capital. However, he only reported minor damage; the roof of an apartment complex was struck.
Moscow Region, however, sustained more serious consequences. Governor Andrey Vorobyov detailed casualties across three municipalities, with the most devastating incident occurring in Domodedovo. A disabled drone struck a parking lot at a food factory, killing a night guard instantly. Another worker suffered severe head injuries and died shortly after being hospitalized.
Two other victims remain in critical condition, Vorobyov stated, while Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova has reported that three children have suffered minor injuries. Hours later Domodedovo head Evgenia Khrustalyova announced the death of another patient who had been admitted with injuries sustained in the attack.
Terrorism investigation
The Russian Investigative Committee has officially classified the Ukrainian operation as an act of terrorism. Moscow claims Kiev has resorted to such tactics due to setbacks on the battlefield.
Russian MP Leonid Slutsky alleged that some of the intercepted drones were aimed at the Kursk nuclear power plant, calling it an act of “nuclear blackmail.” - RT

Videos shared on March 11, 2025 by the Russian Defense Ministry and Russian military correspondents, shows the assault and liberation of Lebedevka in Kursk Region by the Paratroopers “Tula” of the 106th Airborne Division. The crumbling Ukrainian forces trained in the West, surrendered under Russian gunfire, proving once again that NATO’s strategy is “ unworking.” The Kursk border is being secured, and Western assistance will not turn the tide, according to Russian soldiers.
During the rapid assault, first destroying Ukrainian resistance by blowing up their command post with the support of UAV operators. Precision strikes on the command post, paving the way for airborne assault forces using light weapons, assisted by another UAV, to completely take the settlement from the Ukrainian formations that were already overwhelmed from the start. As a result, several Ukrainian soldiers who survived laid down their arms, later becoming prisoners of war.
