Ukraine is losing population through emigration. Its industrial based is being steadily whittled away by Russian missiles and bombs. And its army is suffering catastrophic casualties and there is no solution on the horizon for replacing those loses with trained troops. But it is not just Ukraine. NATO also is being weakened. None of its previous supplies of tanks, M777s, Himars, ATGMs and Bradley fighting vehicles have worked as hoped. Those are being destroyed on a regular basis and there are dwindling supplies in Western warehouses.
I am confident that nobody in a position of power in Russia trusts the United States or NATO to deal honestly. Russia realizes that the West is scrambling to buy time to figure out a way to re-arm Ukraine and train up a new army. Why would Russia entertain such a crazy proposal?
The Western fantasy that what is unfolding in Ukraine is a “stalemate.” Others in the Pentagon fail to understand the Russian strategy underlying the Special Military Operation — i.e., attrit the Ukrainian military to the point that it can no longer fight:
There are two ways Ukraine “can prevail” — No Way and No Way in Hell. Ain’t going to happen. The West no longer has the ability or the will to flood Ukraine with modern weapon systems and tanks. More importantly, Ukraine does not have the trained troops required to operate those weapons even if they could be provided.
Russia is no longer fighting this war alone. It has the backing of China and many nations in the Global South. America’s economic dominance is being carved up and our foreign policy influence is in tatters. Previous allies, like Saudi Arabia, have turned their back on America. The Saudis have re-established diplomatic relations with Iran, welcomed Syria back into the Arab league, ended the American-backed war in Yemen and is working with Russia to counter America’s feckless attempt to put a cap on oil prices.

The flow of US-made artillery ammunition to Ukraine has dwindled by “more than 30%” amid Washington’s scramble to assist Israel in its fight against Hamas, ABC News reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official. Zelensky’s war appears to be on the brink. After a letdown stint at the UN assembly in New York, he’s now in Washington on the last leg of his begging journey to ensure the continuation of the war. Unfortunately, so far, it’s not going very well. The much hoped-for and vaunted ATACMS appears to already be kaput: I persist in informing people there are serious red lines behind the scenes which the U.S. itself fears to cross. That’s because there remain many pressure levers that Russia itself has not yet exercised, and which could easily make life for the U.S. much more difficult, both militarily, economically, and geopolitically in Europe. Polish president himself shockingly called Ukraine a “drowning man” who can pull you under along with him: Like I said, the pressure is really starting to become evident after only a few months of failed counteroffensive attempts. By next spring, Ukraine will have spent 6 months from today likely being pounded into oblivion with no hope any longer on the horizon. If the headlines are bad now, the prevailing sentiment 6 months from now will be apocalyptic. It becomes increasingly clear that 80-90% of the entire AFU was in fact wiped out. Depending what you believe their starting number was, whether 200k or 1 million as Zelensky might have claimed, you can draw your conclusions from there as to total losses. I think the key factor during the next eight weeks will be how much damage Russia inflicts on Ukraine’s remaining military strength and infrastructure. Barring a mass surrender of Ukrainian forces, however, the Biden policy is to keep the war going. Politics is the guiding principle governing the Biden team’s decisions on Ukraine.
