You have to remember that when the donbass and luhansk went independent they asked Russia for protection from ukraine ithink that is why Russia started the SMO the border issue was just another reason to do SMO. I dont fault Russia at all NATO was wznting to box Russia in from as many sides as possible they ,the west wanted regime change in Russia so as to exploit the Russian country of its natural resources.Also to break up the country into smaller countrys so the west could exploit those smaller countrys.I'm sure there were other caculations the Russians used.
