@LeCharles07 Unlike the United States which went from being colonies to full independence within a few years, Australian and Canadian independence was drawn out in many stages.The first was Responsible Government where individual colonies got full control of their own governance and defence (within the empire), although the Colony of Victoria also adopted its own foreign policy when it blatantly helped the Confederates against the wishes of Britain. Next came federation of the colonies into the Australia and Canada we know today. Then came adoption of the Statute of Westminster which made them truly independent (they had only been functionally independent before then). Between these big steps towards independence there were dozens of smaller ones over nearly 100 years.
