  1. In the late 1940s the Australians wanted to establish Antarctic bases, but they were short of ice strengthened ships. However they had Landing Ship Tanks left over from the war. So they partly rebuilt a LST, painted it bright yellow and sent it south to set up an Antarctic base on McDonald Island. The expeditioners said they could see and hear the LST bending in the middle as it tried to cope with the huge waves. Understandably it was scrapped when it returned to Melbourne.
