Reservations will not help in real sense. Discouraging water-guzzling sugarcane and implementing market reforms in agriculture is the solution. Few sugarcane farmers benefit from this subsidy and guaranteed prices for sugarcane, and all other farmers of every caste, are suffering. Less water intensive crops like pulses, oilseeds, millets and soyabean should be grown.
