Whole of Maharashtra is not doing well. There is East vs West divide. Think School covered that. Eastern Maharashtra is bad as Bihar. The sugarcane cultivation induced droughts, and cronyism of sugar mill owners with preferential procurement of sugarcane, has destroyed the Eastern rural economy.

Maharashtra should be split. Vidarbha should be made separate and given separate development package like Bihar and AP. Dependency on sugarcane, and the cronyism happening in sugarcane cultivation needs to stop.

Crores of money siphoned by sugar barons, in sophisticated manner in cooperative banks, and sugarcane subsidies in Vidarbha is much much more. No one can beat NCP at this.

@KotgireTejas Last, I checked Bihari farmers were not taking their own lives.

@KotgireTejas Low rainfall. Yet, growing water guzzling sugarcane? I have read so many articles about sugarcane causing desertification. And don't console yourself by saying, you are better than Bihar. That's a very low bar.

@svrkprabhakar Politicians are themselves responsible for the farmer distress. It's all due to sugarcane cultivation, and politicians own the sugar mills. They don't care.

@humanbeing8376 Ok. Maybe, Eastern MH is not as bad as Bihar. But as an analogy, Eastern MH, is to Whole MH, what UP/Bihar is to whole India.
2
@KotgireTejas So, does that make mean, Eastern MH doesn't have problems? Will you deny the causes for the drought and bad agricultural policy of growing sugarcane in a low rainfall area ?

@kartikaytiwari7387 Farmer suicides are not new to Maharashtra. It's not about aspirations like that of students. It's about agricultural failure. Farmers are not immature like students. They take their lives due to debt and desperation.

@humanbeing8376 If North India is pulling down "whole of India", then Eastern Maharashtra is pulling down "whole of Maharashtra". In the context of MH, you should worry about that.

@humanbeing8376 North has Haryana, that's doing extremely well. Western UP is also doing well. Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have had double digit growth rates. It's Eastern UP and Bihar that's bad, but even they have had 10% growth over the last decade. They seem poor because of low base. But they are not stagnating like Eastern Maharashtra. Bad policies of growing water-guzzling sugarcane is the fundamental problem of Vidarbha. Go check, the wealth of Sharad Pawar and gang. Sharad Pawar even owns sugar mills in Brazil. Do you remember Kalawati? The Dalit woman made famous by Rahul Gandhi? Her husband was a cotton farmer, who died by suicide because of cotton crop failure. And it's all because the farm economy of Vidarbha is skewed towards sugarcane. There are even reports of hysterectomy of Dalit sugarcane cutters, recommended by sugar mill contractors, so that they can do more work, by not having periods. Stop being in denial of this mess, and stop using UP/Bihar as diversion.
