The problem in India is, very few politicians actually have an ideology, that they believe in. The individual candidate's positions don't matter. And this has to do with the first-past-the-post system, which favours consolidation. Even people don't follow any ideologies, of their own. They aren't chosing representatives, but a set of local kings to rule over, and grant benefits. Perhaps, we should have an element of proportional representation, to rate candidates, based on who we agree the most with.

I think we should have proportional representation, at the constituency level, where you rate candidates. Then people will pay attention to the positions of each candidate.
