India never ever had a border with China (or its successor PRC) from the dawn of civilisation. India has a border with Tibet & not China (or its variants or derivatives). Yet, this is what PRC loves it to be portrayed - a "border dispute" to legitimise its occupation of Tibet. Tibet isn't China, but might be a vassal at times. Historically Tibet, on and off was part of Chinese Empire (after that Empire of 4 millennia standing, fell in 2011 & the Emperor, Pu Yi, removed from his throne). From then on Tibet was absolutely free, sovereign country, till PRC occupied it in 1950 & made it a part of China (or PRC).

@jascollinscork How to convey it (TBM) to this inaccessible site? That itself would be another equally big project. Once this tunnel gets completed, other tunnelings beyond, to be taken up will have far less logistics problems. Engineers are trained to choose options, given the place & situation.

@wythetrumpet6419 Problem is how do we reach those equipment there, where there is no proper road to accommodate the passage of heavy equipment by giant trucks. Logistics is a hefty problem unlike in the Alps, which must be at least a few thousand feet below (measured MSL+).

I recall a pair of parallel tunnels (one a 7 meter dia. & another 9 meter dia.) in South India completed, to convey excess flood water of a major river, across (underneath) a mountain range, to parched fields in dry lands.

@humanoid... Some one (statesman) said neighbours can't be best friends. Borders create frictions. It takes stupendous work to remain friends, being neighbours. But in this case China was never India's neighbour from the earliest history (Tibet was & a good neighbour). China being a neighbour across the border was imposed (on India) by that country, by its (forcible) occupation of Tibet. That was the starting point of India's worries.

@danstenis660 All such hopes ended when China invaded & occupied Tibet, a big country (though with sparse population that made the Chinese task easy) in 1950. Before that, India had no border with China, ever (that part was Tibet an independent country from 1911 on).

If you say it, a "Border issue", you are playing the Chinese card, inadvertently. It is what they want, to camouflage occupation of Tibet, an independent country. India's northern borders were intact (else Tibetan regime would've pointed it out), but PRC moved there as a "new" neighbour that India is still trying to cope with. All your 5 fingers will be safe (there'd be no issue at all), if status-quo-ante 1950 were restored.

@BgmiUDT about a 20 tunnelings are in progress all over the country & about the same number are finished &open for traffic. TBMs are routinely used, particularly for (subway)Metro railway projects, as they are located in big cities each with a good road network. But here, Logistics is the big problem.

@pprey6599 Logistics! They aren't executing it in a city in plains but in the loftiest mountains - Himalayas. In fact this tunnel will ease the problem so that heavy equipment can be hauled easily, to places beyond near LAC.

@shirleylavernerosej.120 For the hospitals to be there, they need to be moved. This tunnel helps moving them, establishing a nice road for that. We are not in a city in plains with a network of roads built over a century!

@williamgregory6684 Working in high Himalayas (& the connected ranges of Karakorum, Hindukush, Pamir & Kunlun) is a world apart & has no comparison anywhere in the world : altitude-wise (the first highest 222 peaks- all above 7km altitude are here & nowhere else in the world), logistics - till now there aren't any significant roads (forget railways) that can haul up heavy machinery & this might be the first one to fill that gap), high-altitude sickness which is present at such high altitudes taking its toll on human health (even machines run on 4-stroke engines stop working due to lack of Oxygen) and cost of course. For instance, the altitude here is about 13500 feet (about 4000+ meters) is rare to find in Rockies or Andes & much less so in Alps. Comparisons are odious.

In fact the company has a team of Geologists who study the rock & advice them on the technical methodology to be adapted in this tunneling. Also, you imply that personnel working under private contractors aren't patriotic, as any other Indians are. It is baseless.

@itsmycontact India is a democracy. Whatever they do must be reported back to the people (like this video), who may have to approve the task, the way it is executed. Every life counts and not tagged as "collateral" damage, if lost.

@binaymahanta2137 That is being done. Leh, the capital is emerging as a bristling, busy city though one needs to acclimatise to compensate for that altitude (11562 feet AMSL) on arrival. Even it is a family station for the army where they lead routine lives as in any other city. Other places on LAC aren't far off & well-connected by road network. This tunnel is one such. Government is leving no stone unturned to meet the contingencies imposed by lofty heights & harshest winters anywhere on globe.

Had it not been so, where is the necessity of tunneling here, if not to make places beyond, accessible for heavy machinery like TBM? For any project beyond this tunnel, hopefully the task will be easier, with modern machinery being hauled there through this tunnel. All over Indian cities there are various tunnels being bored, at various stages, with the latest, ultra-modern machinery being hauled to the site on paved highways.

@richardhayward2800 I think the way the workers are being taken care of, answers your concern. Unusual situations (like this, like nowhere else in the world) call for unusual improvisation of labour laws - keeping the comfort level of the worker at heart. All your labour laws work perfectly well in other places (like the cities or towns where minimum comforts for civic life exist). Here the workers are willingly taking extra risks, contented in a belief that they are getting the best under the trying conditions. In contrast I might cite an example under British rule, where in tunneling work in South India (a century ago) was taken up in hazardous situation. There is a threat of loss of life. Yet workers volunteered safe in the thought that (substantial) compensation, upon a loss of life, would be given to their families, who'd see better days. They were no less than soldiers .

Associated with Himalayas are Karakorum, Hindukush, Kunlun, Altai ranges joining in Pamir knot of mountains. What you call a "mountain" is a range with umpteen number of peaks (their summits at various heights) & Mt.Everest is No.1, with the peak height measured above mean sea level (AMSL). The loftiest 222 peaks (all, over 7 km altitude) are located here in Asia, permanently clad in snow. None are in any other continent. Mt.Aconcagua in South America (Andes range) is 223rd, missing the 7 km mark by 60 m.

The colonial language you say is now owned as another Indian language, while all other major language too are in use. Every educated Indian is multi-lingual. This colonial language as you say, is mastered by the talented Indians (that needs above-average intelligence) who contributed to that literature too. They now derive full benefit of mastery over this language so as to dominate in the Anglophone world (where all important events happen in the world now), to the envy of those who couldn't master this language. It is because of the proficiency in this language, that every educated Indian is welcomed in most of the world. Others who despise this particular Indian ability, denounce it so making it a virtue out of necessity (& inability). It isn't a virtue to measure patriotism, in India.

@melg6834 May be you can debate on ethnicity or its singleness. But all of them (of whatever ethnicity) have a common culture, value system and familial view of the world (Vasudaiva kutumbakam). Ethnicity is discernible only in the immediate context. Over many millennia, all Indians evolved through a mix-up of ethnicity, a truly (& ancient) melting pot of India.

For proper pronunciation of this Sanskrit word one must know(& follow) Sanskrit Phonetics that were wiped clean in Hindi, influenced by Middle East (Urdu) Phonetics. Situation can be corrected only after Sanskrit is declared the National language, opening a bhandar of our ancient knowledge within reach of everyone of us, to access it. Israel did it reviving her ancient language, Hebrew.

It is a strange & weird agreement between any two (contending) armies, the world over. It was the norm in Galwan too. Really there was no cause for any from one army to kill a guy from the opposite army (if I may add - unprovoked). Hence, Col. Santosh Babu of Indian army felt safe to visit the opposite (PLA) camp to talk the matter over. with his counterpart. Meanwhile some of the other troops (prevented from carrying fire-arms as per agreement above) resorted to an improvised technique to ypass the agreement. They wound a barbed wire around a wooden staff, making it a lethal club to bludgeon the unsuspecting Colonel, to death, who was alone. Then the melee started with both sides killing each other, when Indians found that the other were anything but friendly.

@aussiefarmer8741 That can happen only if all Army units in Jammu & Kashmir, with their equipment are withdrawn & out of this state. Hard choices lie with the PLA. They have to be hauled up some 3000 km across the hostile Tibetan land that is a mountainous plateau at an altitude of about 4500 m (highest plateau in the world). Even an aircraft needs more than 4000 m runway at such an altitude with atmospheric air pressure at half the normal (sea level).

@TheNextGoogification The procedure is well laid-out, so as every later tunneler can follow it. There is enough Technology in use so that "break through" happens at the precise location. It isn't blind digging. Many tunnels all over India are done with not even a single miss. Many - may be 20 - city (underground) metros are being built with most of it tunneled, all over the country. The kind of news is just routine. But here in the Himalayan heights the nature (& terrain) is most unhelpful and use of much more Technology (gadgetry) is warranted, which is not a problem in India now. I think, educated foreigners need to really update (to 2024 level) their information on India.

"Himalaya" is a Sanskrit word (& in many Indian languages as they are all daughter-languages of Sanskrit), The word is anglicised & a "s" is placed after it, to denote many peaks (as if every peak is a Himalaya)

The British pauperised the country, India beyond what it was 3 centuries ago (read Angus Madding, a British scholar's analysis).From 1857 when British Crown took responsibility of reigning the Indian Empire(the queen of England, she was proclaimed "Empress" of Indian Empire), till 1950 India had annual GDP growth 0.05% (Economy can double only after 1380years). Expected average life span was 29 yrs! In Bengal famine when the British rulers collected all rice, to feed Indian soldiers fighting their WW II, about 4 million people died of starvation in Bengal (main rice producer & where rice is their staple food) unable to buy it, as price was sky-high. Without knowing any of it, it is too stupid to compare India & the rest of the countries (mainly Europe). You display no sympathy to the then India. Contrast it with China who never wholly had colonial (alien) rule. ¾th Humanity (on ¾th of land area on Earth) were colonies of the British, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Belgian & Italian Empires (Germany was forced to relinquish hers after WW I defeat, appropriated by above). World history then was that of the quarter of Humanity, leaving the ¾th in oblivion (in it India is prominent, with half of British Empire's population, that was the biggest Empire, even without USA that the British ruled once; they won their WWs with lives of Indian soldiers). Indian history is glorious as yet Can you make those comemnts on today's India, that can now take on the world? (could you be one of those who doesn't want India grow in stature equal to the then oppressor, whose PM is of Indian roots & now TATAs of India bought the best of British Industry?).
