  2. @you_dont_know_me_sir The law worsened the Great Depression. It led to a global trade decline of 66% and to a substantial drop in US exports and imports. It likely wouldn't be called the "Great Depression" without the tariffs and would have just been another recession.

But many criticize the tariffs for greatly worsening the Depression, the absolute worst years of it could have been avoided or greatly reduced if the law was never signed. 8 months after the crash unemployment was still single digit, In June 1930 the government instituted the tariffs. Every leading economist across the country signed an appeal to the president not to pass the legislation citing that it would damage international retaliation and other countries would stop buying US products and make it harder for us to sell, which is exactly what is happening now. They were ignored and the bill was passed. Within 5 months international trade was reduced by over half and we had double digit unemployment for the first time and remained above double digits for the entire duration of his administration.
