Violent crime in the UK isn't really far higher than other countries, the UK simply has a far wider definition of what constitutes a "violent crime". In the US, and many other countries, "violent crime" consists only of four, very serious categories - murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In the UK, "violent crime" consists of dozens of categories - it's recorded as a violent crime in the UK if you push someone off a bicycle.

And every year prior to that, New York was worse than London. But the moment London had one terrible month, American newspapers pounced on it and said "Look! When a comparison was made - by an American research group - in 2016, it revealed there were 3,236 knife murders per million of population in the UK and 4.969 knife murders per million of population in the US. Since records were kept, the UK only had a higher knife crime rate once out of 117 reports.
