@DoggleBird I've started a PhD. That is very self motivated research. I'm enjoying the challenge. Everybody thinks that they have something new to offer, but a doctorate offers opportunity to try that out. The PGCE on the offer hand enforced it's political ideas, and even though I didn't (to my knowledge) give them any indication that I wasn't on board, they sniffed me out as a small c conservative leaning person. After that, they ruthlessly tried to eject me from the course. Like yourself I have reasonable level of academic acumen. Even basic essays were questioned for sources when all the sources were stated. It was a beat down.

@DoggleBird Thank you very much for your kind advice!

@DoggleBird My thesis is going to be tricky because it requires experimental archeology and the help of structural engineers to make happen. But I have a central proposition, and it's very good advice to suggest that that is enough of a challenge itself. I would be quite happy if I can demonstrate something that is potentially new work.

@DoggleBird I am concerned that my proposition is somewhat of a minefield. But I can rely on people with provable expertise as well as historical sources. The motivation is that there are certain feats that are not explained well in the historical record. Engineering savvy had to be employed. My thesis is an attempt to come up with a viable way to demonstrate how these feats could (not were) be accomplished. Proof of concept is part of my analysis.

In my case, there is thousands of years of prior knowledge. But not necessarily well documented. So that is part of it. For instance, much of my analysis rests on the capabilities of ropes made of hemp. And I have to be honest, I don't have a clue. I have some humps to jump over.

@DoggleBird I very much appreciate your time. Thank you.

@DoggleBird Damn, thanks for that. I can't tell you how much that makes me feel like giving up. What have I done?

@DoggleBird Thank you for your encouraging words. I am somewhat daunted by what I've taken on. There are people in Egypt that I can rely on to help. And I need that help. Dozens of craftspeople. And an even bigger team when we are ready. Much of it is primary research. I have found some useful material, but almost none of it is academic. But people are coming on board because they are excited by the enterprise. I think perhaps I could get TV show to help with funding. A lot of networking. And that's an aside to the academic aspect, but I can't do this without help. I barely got accepted so I have work to do. Possible funding from the Cairo Museum, and Montreal as well. I know this doesn't sound like a PhD proposal, but I have no idea how to weave a hemp rope capable of withstanding a 12 ton weight I have no idea how to make a block and tackle out of acacia. But somebody does, and it will be an adventure.
