I loved how you mentioned values. This is the top reason I love to watch you: the kindness, generosity, and politeness in addition to all your experiences and knowledge are the top reason I watch you over similar YouTubers Stay awesome, Steve!

We really loved you, man. We trusted you, too. It's not too late to turn it back around
15
Steve, please don't start a cryptocurrency or overcharge for. Putting ads on your YouTube videos is one thing, but Patrick Shyu (TheTechLead's) level of scamminess is completely unacceptable Love your content, man
7
Yeah Steve’s always been humble and polite. Seems like he’d be easy to work with, besides his obvious wisdom from years of technical and office-political situations Hopefully he does find a new job soon, though. However much he’s saved, the mortgage and child rearing costs must be huge

Zach's advice (13:30) to do what it takes to build trust and also to find a manager that trusts you is so so crucial Be trustworthy for its own sake, and stick to your side of the street, solving problems proactively and independently Very similar solution(s) to the next advice at 15:10
5
Wait he's so wholesome, especially contrasting with a few of the tech YouTubers, won't name any names here
5
As usual, very valuable content from a productive, real world, and experienced dev
5
Big hugs. I'm sure you deserve your successes The data say women and minorities feel this even more strongly than others

Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right”, Henry Ford

Wow, really good to hear the story about the mentee, I need to listen better in meetings, but ACTIVELY listen and consider whether my objection is substantive enough to voice Definitely good to hear someone else's experience to soften how offended I get; everyone can relate to someone else's human shortcomings but hearing brutal honesty directly to my face is harder to swallow Appreciate the vid as usual, Steve
2
Answer: cut out TONS of the more useless activities you end up cluttering your day with/ getting distracted by
2
I feel like the biggest issue would be the hit to his salary and whatever he's passing along to his kids Plus he's such a productive engineer, seems like a waste. So few good senior engineers out there helping society, and we'd lose another But of course it's his life, and whatever he wants to do is what he'll end up doing ❤🎉
2
You could also hop jobs. I found a new gig during the recession, can 100% confirm it's possible
2
I don't think it was that bad. I got a lot out of the video, hopefully any ≥ L8 engineers did too
2
Steve, i also think your viewers are 95% male because of other things you can't control Besides the skew in the software industry, you present as an Asian man, and you shouldn't do anything about that I'd be curious to see the different demographics on a Bukola video
2
The format of your channel reminds me of 3blue1brown Subscribed!
2
@slippinchillin EDIT: Nevermind, the commenter just made a typo while summarizing the video I think he meant you should prefer impact over output; his mistake was spending too much time maximizing output instead of impact
2
I wonder how much the specific technology with a specific application in a niche field (8:00) is distinguishing candidates Still, worth a try!!
2
@AnonYmous-yu6hv Yeah bud I think if it's happened multiple times, it's unfortunately your fault But if you take an honest look at your behavior and make a plan for remedying it, I believe you can turn it around!! Many many engineers I know have been in the same boat, especially early in their careers
2
The bitterness is real. Just save what you can. Anyone can do better than yesterday, than last month, help their children save better than they do, etc.
1
@ALifeEngineered This is a great thing to keep in mind; I should be optimizing my stories rather than my resume Do you also happen to know whether ATS systems usually screen us on keywords? I don't have much experience in industry and a lot of these positions ask for specific skills I don't have yet. I'm not trying to craft elaborate lies, I'm just trying to get in the door Thanks!
1
I would also be curious to meet your dog and/or family if you're comfortable with that, Steve
1
I feel like we need even more context, which company you're currently at, what specific career goals the degree would help, etc.
1
So thorough, even better than Bukola's, Warren Buffett's, or that guy from CBS. I wish you had gone into ETF / mutual fund choice(s) and. Knowing the secret sauce would save even more effort and time I will look up the backdoor Roth IRA you mentioned; and I really love the automatic configuration so you don't have to think about it anymore I haven't been that intense about my stinginess as you mentioned, but it definitely has contributed both to my worrying more than necessary and to hurting some close relationships Cheers, Nathan

Was this video the one where Steve automatically allocates into his investments?
1
You could find a lower paying and/or lower stress job, man. You broke our hearts with this You’re still the tech YouTuber we all respect the most, perhaps outside of Rahul Pandey. You could go back and sustain your lifestyle with some easier software day job Wait did you also just lie about the fact that you’re still at Amazon? We all felt for you when you quit
1
Lol if you're serious I'll DM you my PayPal

Summary: 1. Learn my company's promotion criteria, either from an official document or from a team member who has been promoted at our company x 2. Plan to receive the exact type of feedback I want and proactively step up my game and focus on being that way BEFORE I'm up for promotion 3. Actual, detailed evidence in the feedback your fellow engineers give about your performance are crucial to your promotion
1
I mean, obviously he sold the Amazon stock to put it in a S&P index fund instead What kind of risk happy employee would keep exposure to 1 stock when they could grow steadily with 500?
1
A famous YouTuber always quoted some stat saying about 60% of YouTube was male
1
Yeah I'm setting a reminder to review it next week as well
1
So so so valuable and practical, all coming from real life experience. Even when we compare you to some of the other best Tech YouTubers like TechLead, Tina Huang, etc. your advice is so practical, goal-oriented. If you started a Patreon or something like that, I'm sure some folks would pay you just from the benefit they got from these videos I also liked the cute bit at the end about narratives and struggling with the complexities of life, being trapped in your own perspective, etc. It was nice to know someone else also thinks about these things, but still has optimism and enjoys a great story.
1
How do we pronounce Steve's last name? I'm assuming Wen, When, Win, or Hwin
1
That's what she said
1
Focus on the main, most important tasks
1
He does good work
1
Steve always has so many ideas. Easy to see why he's come so far in his life already. His jokes are 🔥, too Also, unfortunately people do lose jobs over asking for more. Not usually, but it DEFINITELY helps to have at least 2 offers in hand before negotiating like that. But generally, asking for more is good
1
It's pretty amazing we get to hear directly from him for free, grateful for YouTube and the internet, such a gift
1
The algorithm should re-recommend this video to me again
1
I wish I had seen this before you chose mentees! Alas. Ah well, I can take this as an opportunity to reflect and look out for opportunities to seek mentorship from a L3/L4/senior engineer mentor
1
Awesome, love the intentionality and focus
1
He has kids, too
1
Lol
1
Might I gently recommend talking to friends / a professional about these feelings? I also like Tony Robbins for helping get yourself out of a funk For what it's worth, your situation is very impressive to me and I don't think this hedonic treadmill kind of thinking is helping you feel as grateful and/or proud as you deserve to :) I sympathize and empathize though, man. Hope you feel less burnt out
1
@ALifeEngineered I'm sorry you keep having that nightmare, man. Dreams are crazy
1
The book question reminds me that I need to take care of all the high priority chores in my life
