  9. Russia went in with 150K troops. The intention was not to occupy the country it was to send a message to the Ukrainians and pressure them into a deal. If a deal was not acheived Russia was going take want they want by force (which is not, nor ever was, the whole of Ukraine). It is simple minded to say Russia went in with the intention of conquering the whole country with force. Russia was actually the smaller force for the first year of the war! If you argue that Russia was stupid enough to think they could sit on the whole country with 150K troops you are severely underestimating the intellgience of the Russians. Russia's economy was almost entirely self-suffcient before the invasion. It was stupid of the west to think sanctions would work long term. Unlike Russia, China's eocnomy is massively dependent on global trade. Equivalent sanctions on China would actually work and create decades of economic problems for China but also the rest of the world would feel it too. Saying Chinas military power is greater than russias is incredibly ignorant. This doesnt mean China's military doesnt have the potential to be greater than Russia but as of now Russia's military is by far more powerful than Chinas. If you were to reverse the roles of NATO and Russia in the this war, NATO would not have performed much better against a Russian backed Ukraine than Russia has thus far. Russia avoided attacking civilian infrastructure for the opening 8 months of the war because they wanted a deal, not to occupy the whole country or play an attrition war. They changed their approach to a war of attrition in Q4 2022. Russia's goal in the opening was to force Ukraine to make a deal but now its to either get an unconditional surrender or to forcfully take what they want (everything up to the dnipro and the black sea coast) and sit on the line of contact until Ukraine gives it up (treaty of some sort). Im not sure if you were saying those ignornant things in the opening of the interview to build rapport with interviewee or not but I thought you would know better.
