@xway2 on the flip side many urban areas in Europe that are much smaller (and even sometimes more spread out!) than the cities in the USA that 'aren't dense enough' .... are dense enough for multiple lines.

Extra bonus: stations make brilliant central points around which to build new development of appropriate density (if the network doesn't go to as many useful places as it should, build such places as part of that development around new stations!)

kind of need to make a distinction between 'ground level' and 'sharing lanes'... if your streetcar is Sharing A Lane with car traffic on roads that actually see significant usage... it's useless. if it's got its own lanes and phases at the lights (bonus points if it gets priority) except when/if it happens to wander through some residential back streets that see very little road traffic at any time at the outermost ends of its lines, that's massively better... but is still technically 'at grade'.... and is the usual way of opperating them anywhere with what is considered a 'good' tram network. Incidentally, if you're running an Actual Train (rather than a streetcar/tram) such that it's sharing lanes with car traffic? That is generally refered to as street-running and has all Sorts of fun interesting rules associated with it. If you're lucky the whole thing is just treated as a giant railway crossing. If you're not you get fun with the train going at super low speeds and having to have cars with lights driving ahead and people standding around warning people off and all sorts of other crazy things. ... there's a reason why this is basically only done when there's a need to move freight a short distance, usually on what amounts to a siding in a factory or warehouse (or in a port, but ports get a bit weird about what is or is not 'road', so...)

@Inucroft Many of London's passenger lines were extended multiple stations past what was, at the time, the edge of the city, with development being built up around those stations ... often initially by the company building the railway.

Given that 'third world country' properly refers to 'any country that is not part of the USA's alliance network (1st world) or the USSR's alliance network (2nd world)' by definition you do not... Some 'third world' countries are actually fairly good these days, to my understanding. And the 'second world' doesn't really... Exist... anymore. That said... yeah, the USA has a Lot of problems and many parts of it are much, Much worse than the parts usually used to represent it (... though some are randomly quite a bit Better sometimes too).
