Local safety and liability related issues (and possibly regulations) mean every escalator I can recall seeing in my life has explicit warnings on it against changing which step you are on while riding it. Rightly so in at least some cases, where the escalator is narrow, steep, and, in some cases, has steps shallower than the length of my foot! (Not by very much, just enough to be unsettling) Of course, the more modern malls have, in some cases, done away with escalators entirely, using something more akin to a sloped travelator(sp?), Which can accommodate shopping trollies, wheelchairs, etc as well. Obviously, those have no such warnings. They also take up a lot more space.
