  1. The workspace manager kind of treats them all as the same work space in some respects... though it becomes very obvious that they're not the moment you disconnect one of the monitors ^_^

  2. A one time combination of bugs and errors on the part of several parties. The actual problem was fixed very quickly, steps taken to avoid the situation arising again, and System76 have since made changes to the way the OS handles a number of things such that even if such an unlikely thing did happen again, the user would have to work a LOT harder to screw themselves over (like 'if you know enough to be able to do this, you know enough to know NOT to do this' levels of harder.) It should also be noted the Linus didn't actually wipe his system. He uninstalled the desktop environment. Just as unusable, much less unsalvageable.
