Turns out that the reality is that the royal family owns a Lot of land and business in a private capacity independent of being the monarch... and give basically the entire revenue from most of it to the government in exchange for the government managing the upkeep. this income vastly exceeds Everything royal related that the British government actually funds, and Also the amount that the government would collect in regular taxes from those properties and businesses. Basically, it is acceptable that the royal family is government funded because a substantial portion of the government is royal family funded.

@Egooist. oddly enough, if monopoly is played according to the printed rules by people who actually know how the game works... to my recollection it takes maybe half an hour, with quite a bit of that time taken up with resolving auctions. It's also very dull.

@tlpineapple1 The best/worst part is that the vast majority of the various houserules that supposedly 'fix' the game actually compound its problems (from a gameplay point of view). However, when you realise that the main point in most of them is not to make the game play better, but to increase how long a game keeps the children occupied while minimising the number of tantrums thrown, thereby freeing up the adult in charge of the group to carry out more productive tasks, then it makes quite a bit more sense.

Ownership of IP used to be handled fairly sensibly. Then Disney (and later others. The music industry in particular) got to the relevant law makers in the US, and US diplomats and military might got to basically everyone else.
