When I had to replace my lamp a year or three ago, a full half the lamps that were to be had were touch lamps like this. Thing is, in my 30+ years of life, I'd never seen nor even heard of them before! The sales assistant did warn me at the time that the ones with dimmer switches tended not to play nicely with LED bulbs, but given that those cost more and I didn't need a dimmer switch anyway, that was fine. It's worked out pretty well for me so far ^_^ Edit: though my having not encountered them before is apparently a bit of a fluke, as they have been around.
