Pretty sure the actual problem is that in it's normal usage "vinyl" is a mass noun, which then causes it to sound decidedly off when treated as a count how in the context of "a vinyl". Certainly, when I was a kid (in the 90s), no one called them that, they were "a record", but either vinyl or record works equally well as X in "a X collection", because collection is a count noun.
