This means that they haven't progressed from concrete to abstract thinking. They do not have critical thinking skills. 66.2% of Americans can't get $500 together for an emergency. They work 2-3 jobs and can't pay rent and buy food for their children. They are so time poor that reading headlines is their news consumption.

Then they have to "volunteer" to get food stamps. When you are working 6-7 days a week you don't have to read the news. It doesn't mean you are apathetic. It means that you are overwhelmed.
