Part of the reason folks were vulnerable to the MAGA cult was because they felt like that they didn't belong.
60% of Americans can't get $500 together for an emergency and they work 2-3 jobs and can't pay rent and buy food for their children. Living in neoliberalist "Poverty as a Policy Choice" is not living in a Republic.
David Cay Johnston, talked with Rick Wilson and discussed at the end of "The Enemies List" podcast that 60% of Americans are reading and writing at a 6th Grade level. That 1 in 3 of these people are reading and writing at an 8 year old level.
Rick Wilson didn't seem that curious or interested in these facts. Rick didn't seem interested in Johnston's solutions either, which surprised me. Rick Wilson has brilliant analytic skills. I am a massive fan. But he has this one blind spot which puzzles me. This means that these Americans haven't progressed from concrete to abstract thinking. They don't know who Murdoch is or what he owns. They are at a 6th Grade level level. It makes them vulnerable to the spectre of the strong man, authoritanism and cults.
Food insecurity and housing insecurity have a profound effect on attitudes and mental health of folks. Prejudice and scapegoating others becomes a way of relieving and manage profound insecurity and anxiety. These folks could be microtargeted by Rick Wilson and his great team of ad makers.
Trump and Fox are good at the amygdala hijacks, either fight, flight, freeze or fawn. For those already feeling lost and overwhelmed this alleviates massive anxiety by watching the scapegoating of others. This provides comfort because that are not the target. Amygdala hijacks literally means their pre frontal cortex is shut down. Biology prevents rational thinking. They are literally feeling their lives are on the line. A 6th Grader doesn't think about things in a sophisticated manner. A human's nervous system reverberates with anxiety and it can't tell what is here now from what is on TV.
Both Republicans and Democrats conspired together to use "Poverty as a Policy Choice". Shaming folks for being poor and making them work for food stamps when they are already working 2-3 jobs makes them highly vulnerable to anger, rage, despair, resentment, cults and/or the strong men who will save them and tell them what to do. .
A living wage could have prevented the rise of Trumpism. Access to health care could have prevented the rise of the desparate MAGAs. Republicans and Democrats not using neoliberalism which has the side affects of not just poverty but also loneliness, disconnection and a lack of a community to belong to could have prevented the rise of Trumpism. Addressing "Poverty as a Policy Choice" that shamed so many people for being poor would end the Republican and Democratic gaslighting that made folks so vulnerable to MAGA in the first place.
