It is not 20%. It is 60% of Americans who are reading and writing at a 6th Grade level. 1 in 3 of these are reading and writing at an 8 year old level. 66.2% of Americans live pay check to pay check. They work 2-3 jobs and can't pay rent and buy food for their children. Then they have to *volunteer" to get food stamps. Poverty, illiteracy, racism and Intergenerational Trauma means that Americans do not have enough nutrition to learn.

 @danpenry8899 Children who are hungry don't learn. It is not the parents fault. They have been missing many meals long before their children miss a meal.

@falconquest2068 There are lots of strategies for teaching critical thinking. Even the notion of common sense is a concept to unpack and compare which types of common sense are used in different contexts.

@NickyM1964 Private schools do not have to accept all students. Students with disabilities aren't accepted by private schools. Students who have behavioural challenges don't have access to private schools. Students who do not have enough to eat don't have to be accepted by private schools. It is very different teaching in public schools to private schools. Most teachers have a second job in order to purchase supplies for their students.
