Kelly did not even give his mother or his sisters one penny of the money he robbed from the banks at Euroa and Jerilderie. His sisters were seen in Benalla dressed in rags and skinny. A police officer saw their plight and raised funds from the community and gave it to the local shop keeper, who provided the girls with clothes and food. So much for Kelly being a Robin Hood type character.

Sgt Kennedy had 5 children under 10 years of age and Constable Lonigan had 4 children. Both their wives were pregnant at the time. So according to you, do they count?

  22.  @awakeandwatching953  BRUTAL? BRITISH? The Victoria government enacted The Lands Act in 1860 to grant land on excellent terms to poor immigrants. The act had some errors but by 1869 the act was fixed and squatters were no longer on that land by 1870, well before Ned Kelly started his reign of terror across NE Victoria. Two of the first premiers of Victoria were IRISH. 82% of the police force were IRISH. Ned Kelly was only opposed to the state as they were trying to bring his criminality under control. If you claim the government was brutal, show me some evidence. You won't come back as you are talking made up nonsense that sadly you believe.

BUT guess what? They found no evidence at all that the police acted other than in an appropriate manner, towards the Kelly's. “ It may also be mentioned that the charge of persecution of the family by the members of the police force has been frequently urged in extenuation of the crimes of the outlaws; but, after careful examination, your Commissioners have arrived at the conclusion that the police, in their dealings with the Kelly’s and their relations, were simply desirous of discharging their duty conscientiously; and that no evidence has been adduced to support the allegation that either the outlaws or their friends were subjected to persecution or unnecessary annoyance at the hands of the police.” The only oppression that occurred was by Kelly and the Greta Mob who stood over their victims and threatened them with more harm if they dared to report the theft to the police. Did you hear any mention of that behaviour in this video? Of course not.

He robbed them all, and at Faithfull's Creek station when one man stood up to him, he put the barrel of his revolver in his mouth and threatened to shoot him dead if he did not obey. At Glenrowan Kelly was playing with a revolver he stole and fired a shot, hitting George Metcalf in the eye. Kelly refused him medical attention, and he died 2 months later. At Glenrowan he put 62 men, women and children in harms way and two of them were accidentally killed. It was a bastard act by Kelly to do that, and he is responsible for their deaths. The facts show that Ned Kelly was a thug to his hostages. Your comment follows fiction that you have read written by authors who lauded Kelly instead of presenting him as he was, a very serious criminal.

Ned Kelly had a massive horse stealing 'business' where he would steal horses in the dead of night, usually from poor selectors, and move them to a criminal accomplice's property and hide them until he had about 12 horses. He would then move them over the River Murray, again at night time, and release them near a pound where the pound keeper would hold them, then when they were not claimed, would be sold at a low price. Kelly was also stealing stock in NSW and hiding them on his accomplices properties until he had about 12 horses, and he would then bring them into Victoria and release them near a pound. After a time they would be sold back to Kelly, where he obtained a proper title to them. It was a massive business, until police discovered a lot of horses held at Barnawatha and began to tear his 'enterprise' down. You have no idea, do you?

Kelly was hell-bent on removing the government and the police, so he could carry on his criminal enterprise of massive stock stealing. So if you claim he was standing up to the government, why was he doing that, when the government was assisting so many people get ahead in the new colony?

  38. gh0st gamez WRONG. Ned Kelly opened fire on the police at the front of Ann Jones inn, at 3.15 am Police returned fire, and he was wounded twice in his left arm and in his right foot. He walked straight back into the hotel and went straight out the back door. Walked 150 metres and lay down behind a large log. He remained there until 7 am, when he rose and attacked police from behind. Sgt Steele brought him down with two shotgun shots to his legs. It was not raining.

There is so much fictitious nonsense promulgated about Ned Kelly that sadly, he, to some, is some sort of hero, when in fact he was a very serious criminal, as the facts show. We should all care that our history is recorded accurately. When it comes to Ned Kelly and his clan, all we see is fictitious nonsense, that clearly has influenced a great many people. From my readings the government, that had two Irish premiers in the early years, were very generous to poor settlers by granting them land on excellent terms. At least 80% of those settlers made a go of it on their land. Let's see what you have got there, callum.

  46.  @kempodle4665  Getting rid of the squatters and granting land to poor settlers on excellent terms was what the government did. They did treat people well. When there were droughts, bushfires etc. the government deferred rent on the land, and they certainly tried to be fair to the settlers. Ned Kelly just robbed from all the settlers, and he didn't care who he robbed from. His thieving sent many settlers bankrupt, as they could not replace the horse he had stolen. The government and the police worked hard to rid the NE of Victoria of the Kelly scourge and when the scourge was removed the entire NE population were glad to see them gone.
