@CommittingSudoku Of the entire population in NE Victoria which was about 14,500 only about 200 were supporters of Kelly. That is about 2%. the police he murdered at Stringybark Creek were all well respected in their communities. Sgt Kennedy had 5 young children and his wife was pregnant. Kelly knew that, but still shot him in cold blood with a shotgun to the chest while he was standing up. He then robbed the corpse. What a disgrace he was. Constable Lonigan had 4 children and his wife was also pregnant. Those police were just doing their duty keeping their communities free from the scourge that was Ned Kelly and his gang of thugs.

@fishmanmenace He WAS deliberately cruel. At Faithfull Creek Station, when a man stood up to Kelly, he placed the barrel of his revolver into his mouth and threatened to shoot him if he did not obey. He threatened Mrs Devine, the police officer's wife, at Jerilderie, threatening to murder her and her three children if she did not obey him. She suffered mentally for the rest of her life. At Stringybark Creek, after chasing Sgt Kennedy through the bush for some 800 metres, wounding him and then questioning him for about 2 hours, he put a shotgun to the sergeants chest and pulled the trigger. Kennedy had pleaded with Kelly to leave him alone, as his wife was pregnant, and he had five young children. Kennedy was not badly wounded, as he was standing upright when Kelly murdered him. That WAS deliberately cruel.

If the truth was known by the majority of the population Ned Kelly would be treated the same as Ivan Milat and thoroughly despised. I would be interested to know where you are getting your information from as so much fiction lauding this serious criminal has invaded book shelves in the last 30 or so years and has distorted the facts.

The story is iconic, but a man who murdered, robbed banks, took hostages at gunpoint, stole horses from anyone he could, including poor Irish Catholics, who was a stand-over thug, does not qualify as an icon, Larry.

Two superintendents were recommended for retirement, but the government rejected that finding, and re-instated them and a few weeks later promoted them to police magistrates. Only 3 were dismissed and they were junior officers. No one was fired as you claim. Training and procedures were improved, that is correct, but almost all you have said is complete ROT.

Most police were married with young children, and they were well respected in their towns, as they kept their people safe from the Kelly scourge. Show us where there was corruption in government. The Royal Commissioners were ALL anti-police and they went after the police big time, but they found nothing that reflected badly on the police in NE Victoria.

That petition is still in possession of Records Victoria, and there are a total of about 12,400 signatures, BUT many are in the same handwriting and pages and pages are also in the same handwriting. Professional historians believe the actual figure would be about 3-4,000 REAL signatures.

After he shot Constable Fitzpatrick at the Kelly home, he disappeared into the ranges, leaving his mother and two of his friends to face the music. After robbing the banks of a huge amount of money, not one penny of that was given to his mother of sisters, who were seen in Benalla dressed in rags. A police officer saw their plight and collected money from the community to assist them. He even abandoned his own mother and sisters. He was so brave at Glenrowan and after the initial exchange of fire he walked back into the hotel and straight out the back door and lay down behind a log for 4 hours, leaving his brother and two more friends to their fate. Yet you claim he was loyal to friends. GEEZ.
