With the new Highlander available is the RX obsolete? As a 3 row crossover I'd argue the RXL was obsolete the day it was introduced in 2018, let alone now. It's common for reviewers to note that most 3 row SUV's are "meant mainly for children." But there's a difference between cramped and utterly ridiculous. The Highlander offers less third row legroom than any other midsize mainstream 3 row SUV at 27.7". A Mustang has 30" of legroom in its back seat. It's difficult to believe but the RX-L is even worse with about 23". Useless even as an "emergency" third row. In fact, using the third row for anyone over 4' tall is likely to require amputating the passenger at the knee. Of course luxury SUV's, unlike their mainstream counterparts, don't necessarily emphasize functionality as a design priority. But the Lexus RXL makes a mockery of the "U" in an SUV. What about the shorter RX built on the same platform as the previous generation Highlander but lacking the ridiculous third row? In that case the most appropriate comparison is probably the recently announced resurrected Venza. The latter will be available only as a hybrid and is somewhat smaller than the RX. I suspect, however, that it will cannibalize sales from the 4-5 passenger RX.
