It appears that the new GLI will stick with the engine components and tuning of the MK7.5 GTI rather than the MK8. That will disappoint some but it's actually a minor issue. Furthermore, since the Jetta is built in America and not even for sale in Germany it would be surprising if there were a MK8 version of the GLI. Of greater concern for those interested in the GLI is the question of availability. My dealer, one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest, has been told by VW not to expect any more current Jettas, much less GLIs (2021 or 2022 models) , before the new years as a result of the infamous chip shortage. Personally I wouldn't give up the versatility of my GTI and my dog tells me that the absence of rear seat HVAC vents is a deal breaker in the GLI but for others looking for an affordable compact sport sedan with European manners and driving feel the GLI is certainly one to consider.
