If one is considering spending $60,000 or so for a loaded Explorer ST or Platinum model, it's difficult to imagine why not to choose a moderately optioned mid-trim (Reserve) version of the Aviator with an MSRP around $65,000 instead. Same engine and power train, a vastly better interior, much more premium features, better ride and handling, and a tow rating of 6700 lbs. If Sofyan is disappointed with that tow rating in the Aviator it's difficult to see why the maximum rating of the Explorer at 5600 lbs isn't a much greater disappointment. Of course, MSRP's are often misleading and the fact that Ford dealers are already discounting the ST and Platinum versions of the Explorer by $5K-$7K just to get them off the lot may widen the real world price gap. But Lincoln dealers are discounting the Aviator, as well, though not as heavily. All in all, a price difference of $5K - $8K between a top trim Explorer vs an Aviator seems well worth the upgrade.
The conclusion is inescapable. Either the Aviator is a bargain compared to the Explorer or the top trim Explorer models are ridiculously overpriced. Take your pick. Of course, as a pure value proposition the Aviator may come up short compared to a Telluride or Palisade. But within the Ford family it's a far better value than a top trim Explorer.
