I suspect that the new Tucson's design inspiration comes from a 1930's Flash Gordon movie serial. In fact, I think before a final design of their vehicles is approved Hyundai employs a committee charged with adding bulges and creases here, there, and everywhere. Not, I think, a design that will age well.
Furthermore, in the case of the Tucson (and the Palisade) placing the headlights just above the bumper is a TERRIBLE idea. Obviously the designers don't live in the Pacific Northwest where the spring thaw brings tons of rocks and gravel down from the mountains to the lowland highways. Drivers here learn to give a large berth to large trucks that throw those rocks like bullets at the vehicles behind them. Replacing a windshield every couple of years is a cottage industry around here. Putting the headlights just above the bumper makes them vulnerable not just from 16 wheelers but from just about any vehicle less than six car lengths ahead.
Otherwise, the new longer wheelbase Tucson is an appealing vehicle. Significantly more interior space and a well thought out interior with lots of bells and whistles. With significantly more passenger and cargo room, the Tucson now competes well with market leaders CR-V and RAV4. If I were in the market, though,, I'd wait to see if the updated generation of the KIA Sportage based on the same platform as the Tucson lacks some of the weaknesses of the Hyundai Tucson.
