Of course the 4Runner is long in the tooth. Dressing it up in a TRD suit is hardly a "major change." On the other hand, why should Toyota do more? In 2018 Toyota sold more 4Runners (140,000) than ever before. In fact, sales have increased every single calendar year since 2011. Recently I was on a trip and noticed a brand new 4Runner with a disabled plate sitting in the hotel parking lot. "Hmmm, that's odd, I thought." At that point the owner, an elderly gentleman, approached the 4Runner. He explained that his wife's back trouble had encouraged him to replace their 23 year old 4Runner with a "modern" version. Considering his age I doubt he'll have to replace his new 4Runner in 2042 but clearly his experience is a testimony to Toyota's legendary reliability.
