The problem with an analysis based solely on percentage changes in the last year for Mazda vehicles is that it fails to account for two factors. First, the 2020 calendar year had the worst sales for the brand in years. So bad, in fact, that Mazda borrowed over $2 billion from Japanese banks just to survive the pandemic. Second, percentage improvements (or small declines) in 2021 still reflect the extremely low volumes of sales for Mazda vehicles compared to 2020 . Of the entire Mazda portfolio of vehicles sold in the US only the CX-5 and CX-30 have sales of over 50,000 units over the first 9 months of 2021. And its most expensive (and profitable) vehicle, the CX-9, remains mired dead last in sales among mainstream 3 row SUVs.

@KirkKreifels Sorry, man. Look, I've owned 4 Mazdas over the years. I have considerable respect for the brand's engineering. But the fact that Mazda's 2021 sales figures are better for 2021 than they were for 2020 ignores the fact that almost every automaker has had much better sales in 2021 than in 2020 when there were months in which dealerships were closed due to the pandemic. Of mainstream brands only Ford, and Subaru (barely) are behind their sales numbers for 2020. As a brand Mazda's market share in the US hasn't exceeded 2% since 1994 and has been basically flat for years between 1.5% and 1.9%. Its problems stem in large part from the dismal sales of vehicles in especially popular market categories such as midsize SUVs (where Mazda stands alone not having a two row entry) and sales in the declining (but still significant) midsize sedan category where the Mazda6 has disappeared altogether. As far as the claim that you could "refute (my) last few claims about the CX-5" I'd be interested in hearing your evidence. As far as I know, it remains the case that the CX-5 and CX-30 are the only Mazda model with more than 50K sales through the first 3 quarters of 2021. And the CX-9 remains where it has been for several years, the worst selling 3 row midsize SUV on the market.
