With the CX-50 Mazda will be the only mainstream automaker with TWO compact SUVs and only ONE midsize SUV. Recall what happened to the CX-3 when the CX-30 was introduced in the US? The CX-5 is by far the best selling model in Mazda's North American portfolio and perhaps Mazda believes there's room for a closely related model but I'm somewhat skeptical.

@twillias4714 It's not a question of whether it makes sense to offer a variety of SUVs. As noted, Mazda has a hole in their SUV portfolio in the midsize category. But the CX-50 doesn't fill that hole. Instead Mazda is offering what amounts to a competitor to their own CX-5, just as the brought out the CX-30 that cannibalized sales of the CX-3. What happened? The CX-3 disappeared from the North American market due to terrible sales.
