Depending solely on "private enterprise" to build an infrastructure for EVs makes no sense and only invites the current hodgepodge of stations and limitations according to the brand of EV involved. That's why the current administration has proposed building a nationwide network of EV charging stations at over half a million locations by 2030. Furthermore, the spread of EVs will require a significant change in the tax structure supporting the building, repair, and maintenance of highways. Currently the lion's share of funding for those purposes come from taxes on gasoline at the pump. That makes no sense in the context of a transition to EVs. Vehicle taxes based on miles driven or street and highway funding from general revenue is inevitable.
