  1. A word about reliability and resale. In terms of reliability Toyota and Lexus routinely rank at the top of brand ratings. But "ranks" tells one nothing about the actual incidence of reliability issues. No more than a second place in a horse race tells you whether the horse lost by a nose or 17 lengths. In fact the actual incidence of significant reliability problems among vehicles from different brands is minuscule with well over 90% of new vehicle buyers never experiencing a single significant issue in over 8 years of ownership. As far as resale is concerned, differences depend to a large extent on a vehicle's age. For example, in 2012 I purchased a top trim KIA Sorento. Six years later I traded it for a new Sorento and received within $800 of the KBB estimated trade-in price for a comparable 2012 Highlander. But I purchased the Sorento for about $6000 less than the best offer I received from a dealer for the Highlander. A little 3rd grad arithmetic reveals that I saved over $5000 by purchasing, driving, and selling the Sorento.
