Do you think the country will be better off without an education system?

@unionjackjackson4352 This kind of view can only really be held by someone who doesn't know a single lecturer. Where on earth do you get the idea of 13 weeks holiday a year? When do you even think that holiday would be? And £40k? You won't be able to find a single first postdoc position getting more than £30k. It's baffling to me how people form these opinions based on just nothing - a completely fabricated alternate reality for themselves.

What exactly do you think we do? Do you know any lecturers? What gave you this impression?

I'm a mathematics lecturer. I've been published many times, and lecture in numerical methods and group theory (and supervise various research projects). How much do you think I earn, and how much do you think I should earn for this?

@WhoDaresWinso7 I don't follow?

The last offer made to the UCU was 3%

Unions win workers' rights.

Is it not more of a disgrace that they, and you, are being put in this situation?
3
@talboyovGY Don't you think you deserve better?

I'm a maths lecturer. I very much doubt your English professor friends were on amazing money and pensions, but if they really both achieved the level of professor then that's a huge amount of work and academic contribution. They will have been published a huge number of times and been very well respected as experts in their area. What did they get paid exactly?

This kind of opinion can only be held by someone who hasn't been to university, and doesn't know any academics. It's complete fabricate-your-own-reality territory.

You really want world experts in every subject to retrain as truck drivers?

@yofinance1777 What would you replace it with? Or would we rather no education?

How do you mean?

@garethkalum8297 I was on strike, along with all my colleagues, who were referred to in this comment as "left wing activists."

@talboyovGY We don't see ourselves as above the average citizen - we think the average citizen's lot should be improved also.

@talboyovGY I can certainly think of a few people who aren't feeling it right now. University administrators have had their pensions and pay protected, but university staff have not. That's the issue. Furthermore, the majority of issues raised by the strike are not anything to do with money. This isn't about affordability, but choice.
1
@talboyovGY Money features in the disputes over pay and pensions (for example, our pensions have been cut 25% since 2009) but not in most of the issues being raised - such as casualisation, workload and job precarity.
1
@talboyovGY It's the current reality yes, and the aim is to change that.
1
It's not about affordability but choice - university administration are doing fine. Many vice chancellors are earning well over £100,000, while academics have seen our pay and pensions cut, workloads increase and conditions deteriorate year on year.

And replace with???

@karlball42 Do you really think anyone can perform the role of a lecturer? conducting research, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and supervising projects.
