@billselznick1040 That’s because underground artists and bands who generate little attention care more about the quality of the music than simply for the hits. Top 40 lists haven’t been good in over 20 years now. Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, all cookie cutter garbage dwelling in mediocrity. There is little known music from the 1970s - 2000s era that I discover every day and add to my playlist. I don’t restrict myself to one generation of music. Neither should you.

I listen to podcasts. They are a good way to relax and when you need to take your mind off of things.

This started in the 90’s. Cable TV was becoming popular and satellite TV was just getting started.

@stevenfunderburg1623 Millennials contributed to the decline. The music industry saw how enormous Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were in their prime so they decided to replicate them. I don’t think Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Selena Gomez and the like would of existed without Britney Spears paving the way for them. Generation X was the last generation to grow up in a completely analog world. They borrowed a lot from the Silent and Boomer generations and did their own thing. Even Kurt Cobain made a music video that was a spoof/recreation of an old vintage 1950’s era television show (Buddy Holly comes to mind), but you wouldn’t know that just hearing the song. Millennials on the other hand took what good Gen X brought to the table and destroyed it. Now Gen Z is expected to follow in the footsteps of Rihanna and Taylor Swift when it comes to pop. Over produced, commercialized fluff.

Old time radio shows were essentially shows that later transferred to television. Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, and other legendary performers got their fame on radio. Lots of old gems that are probably forgotten by most, but well worth checking out. Plenty of drama, crime and variety shows got their start on old time radio.

I’ve been saying this ever since Rihanna and Justin Bieber got big back in the mid 2000s. My own generation has a hand in this mediocrity we’re seeing today, as we were lied to and manipulated when it came to giant contracts from big labels run by massive corporations. Justin Bieber has been mediocre his entire career. I’m not insulting the guy, I don’t think he really did any wrongdoing. He was a victim of the system and the environment he was brought up in. Same with Rihanna and Taylor Swift. The Zoomers born past the year 2000 don’t know any better, because as kids they fully bought into the social media craze. Those who are finally seeing the light of day are turning to older music. Shouldn’t be a coincidence that young people are just now discovering Elvis Presley and The Beatles, who end up being massive fans of their work and legacy.

@JosephBoxmeyer-u3d Your story reminds me of an 80 year old couple that lived not far from me who were talking about how bad television is, and how shows like The Carol Burnett Show were so great despite their limitations. I never heard about Carol Burnett, but one day when I was there to help with their housework they convinced me to watch an episode of her classic show from the 1960’s on DVD. It was laugh inducing. Mainstream entertainment has become so bad largely because there are no limitations anymore. So in regard to music, everyone just skips past a Taylor Swift song because it lacks feeling. Then they stumble upon an old Led Zeppelin song and skip that too because it doesn’t interest them. This disposable entertainment culture has created a feeling of defeat, disrespect, uncaring aura that is hard to ignore.

⁠⁠ @Williestyle-RobotechxMacross-x My 70 year old dad was telling me how he’d have his old Sony radio on in the early 1980’s. Stuff that was never popular but played on certain radio stations. He said the talent was marvelous. Because the music artists never wanted to get famous, or have the media on them, they never gained more recognition than the listeners who listened to them all those years ago. Modern mainstream music is garbage. I don’t listen to garbage music on smartphone apps either because it’s whatever I can stick at the wall to see if it sounds remotely good. But it’s not just music, it’s everything else. That’s how we got MrBeast, a talentless content creator with over 300 million subscribers with all the money he could ever dream of. But he is absolutely clueless on how to be self sufficient.

@pcno2832 The Hays Code was lifted in 1968. What came immediately after were rated X movies, movies that glorified violence, movies that dug into same gender relationships, etc etc. Sam Peckinpah’s 1969 film The Wild Bunch, while rather tame by today’s standards, was highly controversial in that it was a revisionist western with a focus on violence. Characters also were shown without clothes, something the Hays Code was vehemently against. Almost no rated X movie from the late 60’s and 70’s is remembered today. The 1970’s was a period of cult films, some of which are remembered, but many utterly forgotten and better left in the dust.

@Jasmine34952 Laurel & Hardy is the first thing that pops up when I think of art of the innuendo. Groucho Marx spent several decades on Adlibbing in comedy, and he was a master at it. Other performers like Peter Sellers provided their own styles and characters. Today our comedy is basically 30 somethings cursing about current day politicians, and getting cheap laughs in the process.

@smsheard He wasn’t so much a bad writer as much as he was notorious for putting projects on hold. He faced a lot of technical limitations in his life. He even left Hollywood to do work in Europe for a time, writing scripts and directing films for various European actors. Orson Welles had a better understanding on culture than people do today.

I honestly think it’s no surprise that young people are relying on older music to give them a sense of feeling and place. The same is happening with other mediums. I recently showed my young niece the Andy Griffith Show, Dick Van Dyke, I Love Lucy, The Muppet Show and other classic programs that aired on TV. The impact that Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Who left on your generation is undeniable. I was left with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) and Green Day. A different generation for sure, but I still take pride in what those bands did. These young kids going to college today still have modern bands and artists who are good, but they have to search for them. Unfortunately, most of what’s popular now is utter garbage. No soul, no passion, no creativity. It’s a good reason why a number of young people are turning to older music, especially the stuff you listened to.

@ I don't make videos anymore and I simply don't have the time, equipment or resources to be a semi regular YouTuber, or anything close to that. I've posted two videos from the film Anger Management which I did long ago, so there's some entertainment there if you want to watch them. Mostly I just post comments.

You are speaking on legendary musicians. Those guys are all legends in the business. And you should feel grateful to have been around in that era. My generation, the Millennials, could only wish they had half the talent and passion you guys had.

All I know is I hate the direction the music industry has taken. The only ‘modern’ music I can stand anymore is material made by local bands and underground artists. Who don’t have a big following and may be a bit obscure, but whom care about the music they produce.

@tonygavilan Gen Z starts in 1997. Millennials are the predecessors and they are also vapid. The big difference was the internet was much smaller when they were kids in the 90’s and early 2000’s. MrBeast never actually experienced the 90’s. So bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Steely Dan, Blink 182 and Red Hot Chili Peppers are probably foreign to him. We fell off a cliff when America decided to replace 90’s bands with garbage rappers like Future, Drake and 50 Cent. Bands now just do autotune and fail to understand even basic rhythms, beats and tunes like 90’s bands did.

This is where the gap between Baby Boomers and Millennials becomes obvious. I hate to be that guy, but those of us pushing 40 soon were spoiled. Granted not everyone my age got this, some of my friends grew up poor and had to fend for themselves. We were handed 90’s cable television, VHS tapes, Nintendo consoles, small compact CRT TVs, CD music players, Windows 95 computer systems, and legacy dial-up internet. All of these resulted in short form content. We were changing TV channels at a rate previous generations only dreamed about. The problem has become consistently worse. I can acknowledge that I may be part of the problem because I get some of my entertainment from YouTube shorts these days, which does little but shorten our already low attention spans.

@bennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Yeah. Most Gen Z I meet these days who are more sane are either Christian, or simply went to a Catholic or private school. The public schools are churning out drones who will be drug addicts in due time. Many won’t live to see 40 or 50 years old.
