Well let's look at it with logic russia invades Ukraine catches the eyes of nato they apply sanctions Russia in response pushes forward while Ukraine forces are inferior to Russia by ten folds they won't just lay down and surrender so there will still be a bit or resistance for awhile, now nato gets involved to "protect" the last remaining forces pushes Russia back since Russia is so close to Ukraine it won't fall easily to nato thus leading to borders in Ukraine and Russia succeeds in proving containment is temporary and conflict is inevitable.
