They started as ride sharing app and it was cheaper than a taxi. At some point (maybe their idea all along), they went big and increased price and corporatized everything so now they have 3rd party contractors instead of just being a facilitator.

That seems illogical. Running a surplus should go back to the population that made that surplus, after all obligations are paid. If the politicians are doing well enough to send checks out to everyone, they will be reelected, right? That's the reward

@Mady-lo6qb you don't mention that taxis are artificially limited to keep prices high. The idea of ride sharing is that it would be cheaper and underserved areas would get rides. But I'm sure it's more complicated

5th largest economy... it's not per capita. It's a huge amount of productive land, age has cornered some really profitable markets like entertainment and tech. It actually leads the US in a lot of the ways you're talking about, like legislation and popular opinion/culture. You sound ill/misinformed. You should get that checked out.

@Crembaw you sweet summer child.

@FullLengthInterstates i would consider putting some money away for the future as an obligation, I'm sure there's a legal name for a "rainy day fund".

Where I grew up in Central America, they are endangered bc tribes eat so many

But they love Joe Rogan and Elon Musk!

@janisir4529 contractors are a huge part of US labor, and the IRS loves 1099s bc they are on the hook for everything. It's the opposite of hidden labor-- it's scrutinized. Hidden/off the books labor here is being paid "under the table" meaning you're not officially an employee but you get paid cash for your work. Tons of il/legal immigrants and other marginalized ppl get paid this way bc they can't legally work.

Guest looks like Al Franken's kid

Seems to be a part of the lite right flight to Austin. They are not ready for Texas inefficiency although they are going to make that up with the labor savings. Remember that Space X is already in Texas so he knows exactly how like SE asia parts of Texas can be, from an employer's perspective.

EVs fill the n8che of daily beater very well.

@Jim-Tuner napa valley and the rest of the huge agricultural industry would like a word. Then there's logging.

@PBoyle the fact that individuals have to pay to clean up their information but banks pay nothing for data breaches is yet another clue that the rot is conplete in the US

@travisadams4470 i was being sarcastic. The whole state will be Austin because of the influx, and you'll double your electricity need. Better convince Gavin to get juice from out of state.

@quickstart90909 Florida has caps on increases and homestead exemptions. But then there's some benefit for 1st-time buyers. Also some penalty fur selling the house w/in 2 years (house flipping was insane here) all of it slows down sales but we have so many elderly, that putting breaks on property taxes is really useful, such as this year with home prices going up so much

@h8f5 so...hawaii?

@janisir4529 that's not US law, at all. Many professional service industries use contractors so they can stay flexible. Think of industries like the trades where work is done by the job not the hour. If you have mow one commiunity abs then another one comes along, you can quickly hire a crew, do the 2nd job, everyone gets paid and everyone leaves happy. It's not shady at all. Although it can be abused in the way you say, usually by big companies, who want to avoid labor perks like health insurance or trap foeigners on H1B visas. It's still very much on the books and 1000% encouraged.

Boyle is from England, right? So his perspective is from a coalition government, not a winner take all gov. It's nice to hear

@davidnicholson6680 Europeans don't understand how many US states are bigger than their countries, and then wonder why USians don't travel internationally
1
@Jim-Tuner well if you think $65 B "doesn't matter", can I have it? Silicon Valley skews the numbers but it's not nothing.
1
@Jim-Tuner oh, i got you. I'm sorry for taking my argument with someone else out on you
