They started as ride sharing app and it was cheaper than a taxi. At some point (maybe their idea all along), they went big and increased price and corporatized everything so now they have 3rd party contractors instead of just being a facilitator.

@Mady-lo6qb you don't mention that taxis are artificially limited to keep prices high. The idea of ride sharing is that it would be cheaper and underserved areas would get rides. But I'm sure it's more complicated

@janisir4529 contractors are a huge part of US labor, and the IRS loves 1099s bc they are on the hook for everything. It's the opposite of hidden labor-- it's scrutinized. Hidden/off the books labor here is being paid "under the table" meaning you're not officially an employee but you get paid cash for your work. Tons of il/legal immigrants and other marginalized ppl get paid this way bc they can't legally work.

@janisir4529 that's not US law, at all. Many professional service industries use contractors so they can stay flexible. Think of industries like the trades where work is done by the job not the hour. If you have mow one commiunity abs then another one comes along, you can quickly hire a crew, do the 2nd job, everyone gets paid and everyone leaves happy. It's not shady at all. Although it can be abused in the way you say, usually by big companies, who want to avoid labor perks like health insurance or trap foeigners on H1B visas. It's still very much on the books and 1000% encouraged.
