  1. I'm GenX, and my mother was a Trekkie. I used to hurry home after school to watch classic Trek on tv at 3p., and in the 90s, we watched St:NG at 7:30 after Jeopardy (RIP Alex Trebek). Definitely exposed me to classical philosophical concepts and debates, and just enough action and technology to make them exciting stories. Definitely raised me to be a rational liberal and to strive for true equality and compassion among all species.

  4. ​ @Sean-p3o the pilot and the first 3-3.5 seasons were good. It fell off quickly after that, and went completely off the rails in the last season

  5. Back when movies assumed the audience were paying attention. But today's shows and movies assume that they are being played in the background so they have to overly explain things.

  6. Also, it follows the basic boy/nerd fantasy of beating the Big Bad/Bully. Male famtasy is always about becoming powerful enough to beat your opponent

  7. You can see how Lucas might have liked Dune's story of a boy from a desert planet who loses his family bc of an overwhelming imperial attack and comes of age in rebellion against them. Certainly, he made the stories his own, but a lot of the jedi are taken from 7 Samarai (iirc), just as Naboo was clearly based off of Dinotopia ​ @JonathanRossRogers
