@berlin1926 actually NATO has been complaining for 70 years Germany has not been paying its way. This is yet another example of the American taxpayer funding the defense of Europe.

@berlin1926 we only wanted it to demilitarize from a war economy to a regular economy. German officers of all ranks served on the new German military soon after the war. Ironically the same German generals that fought against us in WW2 were part of NATO in 1955 right up until the 70s and 80s. Of course the relationship changed from 45 to now but 2% expenditure has been the minimum for decades if not from its inception. When has Germany hit 2%? The fact is Germany and Europe has vast social welfare programs and they are partly able to have that because Americans pay for their defense. I’ve only ever heard complaints about Germany, in particular, not paying its 2% nato commitment. Germany wanted a nuclear tripwire defense against the Warsaw Pact as it didn’t want its country to be destroyed by a conventional war as NATO retreated backwards. Only nuclear could have stopped the Soviets. We promised successive German governments that we would. Going back to my deadbeat comment. Germany yet again is not paying its way and refusing to help Ukraine with significant hardware. It’s a disgrace. As an American taxpayer I’m sick of it.
