Judges may not permit or consider "ex parte communications" with defendant in a trial outside court. The sheriff was supposed to give a deposition on a lawsuit against him and wanted the judge to help him out of his mess. The sheriff lost his temper seeing his career going down the drain, when the judge refused to help him.

@richardlawrence2890 If that was the case, the sheriff would have stayed there waiting for the police and stated why he shot the judge, but he left based on reports. Leaving a crime scene shows a criminal’s mind.
